Working Life of Earnings Inadequate for UK Workers to Join Wealthiest 10%, Report Says

Based on new analysis, the median employee in the UK would need half a century of salary to attain the net worth of the most affluent 10% nationwide.

Growing Wealth Gap Over Time

This research reviewed financial assets information from the 2020-22 timeframe and discovered that in the pre-financial crisis era, it would have taken 38 years of average worker salary to join the richest segment of the financial hierarchy.

A research lead part of the study stated: "Financial divides in Britain are presently so substantial that a average worker accumulating their complete salary during their working years would continue to be incapable to reach the top of the wealth ladder."

Quantifying the Wealth Divide

The study discovered that the difference between the wealth of the median citizen and a person belonging to the richest segment was £1 million in 2006-08, but had widened to £1.3 million in real terms by recent times.

The economist further stated: "These differences are especially alarming as economic movement in Britain is limited – individuals who begin life wealthy tend to continue being rich, and vice versa."

Proportional Economic Disparity

Although the financial disparity growing in specific figures, the share of complete net worth in the UK held by the richest households – called "comparative financial divide" – has been "largely unchanged since the 1980s," according to the analysis.

Over this timeframe, overall assets in the UK rose substantially from triple the gross domestic product, to almost 7.5 times.

Drivers of Economic Disparity

Referred to as "passive" appreciation, via rising house prices and adjustments to pension valuations, were the main drivers of the growing financial disparity over the past decade, per the analysis.

These appreciations generally flowed to elderly homeowners, the research shows – worsening the age-based economic gap.

Age-Based Economic Gaps

The median economic difference between individuals aged 30-34 and those in their early 60s increased over twofold in inflation-adjusted terms, from £135k in 2006-08, to £310,000.

Geographic Differences

Additionally, there were significant geographic differences, with the average level of net worth in 2020-22 reaching 290 thousand pounds in south-east England, where real estate values have tended to rise rapidly, as opposed to 110 thousand pounds in the NE of England.

COVID Era Impact

During the pandemic, when millions of workers were protected by the public-funded employment protection, and health crisis restrictions reduced expenditure possibilities, the data shows countless homes were in a position to set aside money, enhancing their financial standing.

Wealthier families performed significantly better, though. "The typical family in the lowest-income quintile saw their cash reserves grow by only eighty pounds during the COVID years (2019-20 to 2021-22), approximately equivalent to the pre-crisis period. Conversely, the average household in the wealthiest fifth saw their cash reserves increase by £4,200," the report finds.
