Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Video review systems will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the option to challenge certain decisions from the official, echoing the practice currently in place at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step comes just a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to review specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire watched a video and determined the player was guilty of interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another change at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves situations where spectators have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
