The Princess of Wales's Annual Christmas Carol Concert Pays Tribute to Charity Helpers
Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her customary festive musical service at the historic Abbey, with a congregation comprising royals, celebrities and local heroes who have supported their local areas.
The large audience will enjoy a blend of carols, music and readings from stars like Kate Winslet and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
A Theme of Love and Generosity
The central message of the service, held in the glowing Westminster Abbey on Friday, is compassion and demonstrating care for others.
In the audience are Jonathan and Anna Cordiner, whose young girl was lost to a brain tumour, and who set up a charity, a support fund, to aid parents with a child with a terminal illness.
"The time, care and compassion you give, often without fanfare or recognition, and without any hope for reward or acknowledgement, make an remarkable change to the lives of others," wrote Catherine in a note prior to the carol service.
A Steady Comeback
The princess has been making her own steady comeback to the public eye following her health challenges and treatment, in November making her first public speech for two years, in which she reflected on recognising the "discreet, frequently unseen labour of caregivers".
Musical Talent and Access
Attendees entering the Abbey can listen to budding artists supported by the Future Talent organisation, set up with the help of the Duchess of Kent to widen access to instrumental training.
Carys Wood, aged 18, who plays the trumpet and is from Wales, has been assisted by the trust, with funding assisting with musical instruments, lessons and travel costs - and she said it was "awesome" to be performing at the evening's event.
"Music can be very expensive," Carys said. She is now enrolled at the prestigious music academy, and added that "all people deserve the chance" to hone their artistic talents.
Generations Gathering
Carys's 11-year-old sister, Eliza, who plays the euphonium, will be present at the Abbey. "It's unbelievable that I get to perform here in front of so many distinguished guests," she said.
Attending the service will be individuals spanning multiple eras.
That will feature Saphia Turner, aged nine, recipient of a prize for youthful altruism, who creates and sells art and completes fundraising tasks to raise money for community pantries.
Yuletide Atmosphere and Acts
The Abbey has been decorated with handcrafted festive wreaths, with celebrity baker Mary Berry and floral designer Simon Lycett assisting in their creation.
Taking to the stage will be recording artist Katie Melua, the Abbey's own choir and a nautical singing ensemble, the Fisherman's Friends, who said the invitation to sing was "the icing on the cake for us."
The festive event titled 'Together at Christmas' will be broadcast on a major network on Christmas Eve.
