Minister States Ministry of Defence Investigating Security Risk from Chinese Cars, with Staff Instructed to Refrain from Secret Talk in Cars.

A defense official has stated that the MoD is currently examining the possible security risks associated with Chinese cars, and staff have been told to refrain from talking about classified matters in all cars.

Safety Guidance for MoD Staff

In a recently aired appearance on LBC, a defence minister addressed claims that MoD staff have been instructed not to discuss secret material while riding in Chinese cars.

He explained that the ministry is “examining” cars from China within its fleets, but noted that safety is a concern in all contemporary cars.

We have a fleet of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones represent a very small number.
But regardless of if you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, our instruction to our people is to avoid connecting Ministry of Defence technology into their vehicle, not to have conversations at a secret classification in any car, because of the increasing threats of eavesdropping that exist in every single vehicle, to only have those confidential talks in secure locations. That’s a wise and reasonable thing for everyone worried about security.

When it was suggested that it would be wise for the ministry to cease using every Chinese vehicles, Pollard responded: ‘That’s exactly what we’re investigating at the present time.”

Wider Defence Background

This revelation comes as reports from Scandinavian countries have warned the United Kingdom to the presence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese electric buses, which could allow China to switch off public transport and cause disruption to public transit.

Additionally, a Russia spy ship has been directing laser beams at RAF aircrew, labeled a “highly dangerous” action by defence officials.

This broader security environment highlights the importance of robust protocols and caution in all areas of government activities, including vehicle usage to communication practices.
